I Just Want to Feel Safe. Where Do I Start with a Gun in Miami?
Maybe something happened. A break-in on your street. A scary night walking to your car. A move to a new neighborhood. Or maybe nothing happened at all, and you simply want to feel more in control of your own safety.
Whatever brought you here, you are in good company. Most of the people we teach have never held a gun before they walk in. They arrive a little nervous, a little unsure, and a little worried they will look foolish. By the end of the day they are standing taller.
Here is the calm, step-by-step way to start. No pressure and no jargon.
Step 1: Don’t buy anything yet
The most common mistake new people make is buying a gun first. They pick one off a shelf because it looked right, or because someone told them to, and then find out it is the wrong size, too hard to operate, or something they are afraid to touch.
Learn first. Buy later. When you know how a firearm feels in your hands, you will choose far better. (When you are ready, our guide on buying your first gun in Florida walks you through it.)
Step 2: Take a class built for beginners
Look for a class where:
You are not in a crowd. Our classes have only two to three students, so no one is watching you and you are never lost in the back row.
You are taught, not just handed a gun. A good instructor starts with safety, shows you how everything works, then lets you practice at your pace.
Nobody makes you feel behind. Questions are expected. “Which way does this point?” is a great question.
Equipment is provided. You do not need to own a gun, and you do not need to bring one. See what to bring to class (short answer: not much).
Our Skill Builder course is about four to four and a half hours, mostly hands-on, and covers safe handling, the fundamentals of shooting, accuracy and, if you have children, child safety. If you ever feel rusty afterward, come back for a free refresher.
What should I wear?
Honestly? A great attitude and a smile. That is the only attire we require. Come comfortable, come curious, and leave the nerves at the door. We will take it from there.
Step 3: Know what your first day will feel like
Fear of the unknown is most of the fear. Here is the honest version:
You arrive and meet your instructor. You are not rushed.
Safety comes first: the few rules that keep everyone safe, explained plainly.
You learn how the firearm works, with it unloaded, in your hands, with time to ask anything.
When you are ready, you move to the range with your instructor right beside you.
You shoot, get coached, and shoot again. Most people are surprised by how quickly it starts to feel manageable.

Step 4: Decide what “feeling safe” means for you
A firearm is one piece of personal safety, not the whole thing. Feeling safe usually comes from skills and habits as much as equipment: knowing how to handle a firearm responsibly, storing it properly, being aware of your surroundings, and understanding your responsibilities under Florida law.

Step 5: Think about the concealed weapons license
If you want to carry, Florida has a concealed weapons license, which the state issues. Our class provides the training and the certificate you need for the application. Not sure whether you need one? Read do you need a concealed carry permit in Florida and Florida concealed carry requirements.

Common questions from first-timers
“What if I’m scared of the gun?” That is normal, and it is a good sign. Respect is exactly what a firearm deserves. We go slowly and you set the pace.
“What if I’m the worst one there?” You will be in a class of two or three people, taught by an instructor whose job is to help you improve. There is no worst.
“Do I need to know anything beforehand?” No. Zero experience is fine.
“Is it only for people who want to carry?” No. Plenty of our students just want to learn to handle a firearm safely, whether for home safety, peace of mind or curiosity.
