Nervous About Your First Range Visit? A Minute-by-Minute Walkthrough
Updated: 17 hours ago
Almost everyone is nervous the first time. That's normal, and a good range is set up for it. Here is what to expect, in order.
Before you leave home
Wear closed-toe shoes, a fitted shirt with a collar or crew neck (hot brass can fall into a loose neckline), and your hair back.
Bring a government ID.
Leave jewelry that dangles at home.
Eat something. Low blood sugar makes anyone shaky.
At check-in
You'll sign a waiver and show ID. Tell the staff it's your first time. That one sentence changes how everyone treats you, in a good way.
The safety briefing
Before anything else, an instructor goes over the safety rules. Listen to all of it, even if you have heard it before. The core rules are:
Treat every firearm as if it were loaded.
Never point a firearm at anything you aren't willing to destroy.
Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target and you have decided to shoot.
Know your target and what is beyond it.
Eyes and ears
You will be given or asked to wear eye protection and hearing protection before you enter the shooting area. Many people double up with foam plugs under earmuffs.
At the line
Your instructor stays next to you. You'll start with the unloaded firearm: how to hold it, how to stand, and how to line up the sights. Then you will load and fire a few rounds at a close target. Expect to be coached on one thing at a time.
What will surprise you
The noise. Even with protection, it's loud at first.
The recoil. It's a push, not a punch. A good grip handles it.
The brass. Hot brass lands near you. Don't grab for it.
How much you improve in an hour. Most beginners hit their target by the end.
When you're done
The instructor makes sure the firearm is unloaded and cleared. Wash your hands after shooting, because of lead residue.
