How to Introduce Your Partner to Firearms: A Couples Guide
Updated: 2 days ago
A couples class lets two people learn firearm safety together, at the same pace, with the same information. It also takes the pressure off the partner who is less sure.
Why learn together
You both know the same rules, so your home runs on one set of habits.
Neither of you is "teaching" the other, which avoids a lot of arguments.
It can be a good date, a shared skill, and a confidence builder.
You both know what to do in an emergency.
How to bring it up
Start with safety, not with buying anything. "I'd like us both to know the rules" lands better than "I want a gun."
Offer a class with no commitment to buy.
Let your partner choose the pace. If they need to watch first, that's fine.
Ask what worries them, and listen.
What a couples class is like
You arrive together and take the same safety briefing. You go through handling and shooting basics side by side, with the instructor adjusting for each of you. Some partners are more confident than others, and a good instructor works with both.
If one of you has experience
The experienced partner should step back and let the instructor teach. It's easier for everyone, and it protects the relationship.
Formats
You can take a couples class in a small group setting, or book a private session for two. Ask about both.
