How to Renew Your Florida Concealed Weapons License (and the Mistakes to Avoid)
A Florida concealed weapons license is valid for 7 years. Renew before it expires. If you miss the date, you can still renew for up to 180 days with a late fee, but after that the license is permanently expired and you must apply as a new applicant.
The deadlines that matter
When | What happens |
Before the expiration date | Renew normally |
After expiration, under 180 days | Renew with a late fee (the statute sets it at $15) |
180 days or more after expiration | The license is permanently expired. Start over. |
These come from section 790.06(1) and section 790.06(11)(a) of the Florida Statutes.
What renewal requires
According to the statute, a renewal includes:
a renewal application with an affidavit, under oath, that you still qualify
a color photograph
the renewal fee
Renewal does not require a new training course under the statute. Check the current FDACS renewal form to confirm.
Why a refresher class is still smart
Seven years is a long time. The law, your skills, and your habits all change. A refresher class gets you back to the basics: safe handling, current Florida law, and time on the range. You can take one at any point, and it works best a few months before your renewal date.
Mistakes to avoid
Missing the date. Put your expiration date in your phone calendar today, with a reminder 90 days out.
Moving and not telling FDACS. The department needs your current address.
Assuming a permitless carry law makes renewal pointless. If you travel to other states or buy handguns, your license still matters. See our guide on whether you still need one.
