How to Choose a Firearms Instructor in Florida: 10 Questions to Ask

A good instructor is the difference between a class that gives you confidence and one that wastes a day. These ten questions help you tell them apart.

1. What certifications do you hold?

Florida accepts courses taught by a state-certified or NRA-certified firearms instructor for the concealed weapons license (Florida Statutes 790.06(2)(h)). Ask for the certification, and ask whether it is current.

2. How big is the class?

Smaller classes mean more attention at the line. Ask for the typical size and the number of students per instructor.

3. How much time do I spend shooting?

Ask for the actual range time, not only the class length. The statute requires the instructor to record that you safely handled and fired a firearm.

4. What is included?

Ask about eye and ear protection, firearm rental, ammunition, range fees, and targets. Hidden costs add up.

5. Do you teach beginners, or only experienced shooters?

You want someone who is patient with people who have never held a firearm.

6. Will I learn why, as well as how?

The best instructors explain the reasons behind each rule, not only the rule itself.

7. What is your policy on stopping or going slower?

You should be able to say I need a moment and have it respected.

8. Do you have private and one-on-one options?

Some people learn better alone, with a partner, or at home. It's a sign of a flexible school.

9. What happens after the class?

Ask about refresher classes, follow-up sessions, and where to practice. A school that cares about you will have a next step.

10. What do past students say?

Read recent reviews, and read the ones that mention how the instructor treated beginners.
